Ohio State transfer Micah Potter will be a Wisconsin Badger next season.
“I’m very excited about going to Wisconsin,” Potter said in a release. “Pretty much as soon as I got there on my visit, I fell in love with it. It’s hard not to like Madison. It’s beautiful there, and it’s Wisconsin Basketball. You can’t get much better than that.”
Potter did not play this 2018-19 season, opting to leave the Buckeyes just prior to the season after two years in Columbus.
Last year as a sophomore, Potter played in 29 games, including four starts. He averaged 4.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.4 blocks per game. Potter was expected to be a key reserve for the Buckeyes this season.
Potter took an official visit to Wisconsin in November for the Houston Baptist game.
“It was a great visit,” Potter said. “I look forward to continuing my relationships with Wisconsin as I go through the rest of my recruitment.”
Potter was also recruited heavily by Vanderbilt and others following his decision to transfer.
A former three-star recruit in the class of 2016, Potter chose Ohio State over Purdue, Clemson, Iowa, West Virginia, North Carolina State, and others. He was the nation’s No. 20 ranked center.
While an assistant, Badgers head coach Greg Gard did recruit Potter out of high school.
“It’s a perfect fit,” Gard said. “In terms of our system, how he plays, how we play with our bigs and what he can bring to the table as a player. When you look at transfers, you have to do your due diligence from a cultural standpoint and make sure they’re going to be about the right things. There’s no doubt Micah is about the team first and he wants to be part of something bigger than himself. He understands the big picture.”
As of now, Potter will not be eligible to play until the second semester of the 2019-20 season, but UW could appeal to the NCAA since Potter hasn’t played a single second this season. Potter will report to Madison later this month and expects to begin practicing after final exams have taken place at the University. Potter will have two years of eligibility remaining.
