The Wisconsin Badgers (6-2) take down their little brother from Milwaukee, the Marquette Golden Eagles (6-3) in overtime, 80-77, from the Fiserv Forum in the I-94 rivalry game. Water always finds its level, big brother always rises back to the top where he’s supposed to be.
Badgers now lead the all-time series against Marquette, 70-59. UW also has back-to-back wins over the Golden Eagles for the first time since 2013-14. It was also Wisconsin’s first win over Marquette in Milwaukee since 2016.
Lots of people contributed for Wisconsin today, but I thought UW guard Max Klesmit was terrific today and he was tougher than hell out there.
Kamari McGee gave the Badgers some key minutes off the bench, particularly in the second half when Chucky Hepburn left with an injury from his final shot of the first half. McGee wasn’t perfect, but certainly contributed.
The Badgers held a 77-72 lead with under two minutes remaining in overtime before Marquette went on a 5-0 run to tie the game, highlighted by a Kam Jones 3-pointer. On the ensuing possession, Chucky Hepburn drove baseline and found Klesmit streaking down the middle of the lane for the go-ahead bucket.
Wisconsin did finish with 15 turnovers which was disappointing to see.
It was good to see the squad bounce back from the disappointing loss to Wake Forest earlier in the week where the defense didn’t play particularly well.
The Badgers will host the No. 22 Maryland Terrapins (8-0, 1-0 B1G) at the Kohl Center on Tuesday, December 6th. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (Central Time) and will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
