Wisconsin Badgers Fall To Minnesota Golden Gophers in Axe Game

This was a deeply frustrating afternoon of Wisconsin Badgers football.

The Badgers (6-6, 4-5 B1G) lost to the Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4, 5-4 B1G), 23-16, in the battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe in the regular season finale.

Wisconsin had a chance to tie the game in the final minute of the game, having the ball first-and-goal from the Minnesota 5-yard line. But the UW offense lost their focus and composure, committing four penalties for 25-yards.

This is the most mind-bogglingly embarrassing five play sequence in Wisconsin Badger football history:

I’m both truly sad and disgusted with today’s game and losing to Minnesota in consecutive seasons.

That is a snapshot of the 2022 Wisconsin Badgers football season. Let us please never speak of this season ever again.

Graham Mertz isn’t perfect, but he’s basically the ring leader of this circus right now.

This 2022 squad plays less complimentary football than any Badger team since Don Morton.

The University of Wisconsin might want to delay the Jim Leonhard press conference. This was not an impressive resume builder. Conservative offensive decisions (other than one drive), his defense torched by a backup quarterback who had done nothing all season.

The story of the season … We all knew the struggles of the offense, but even the defense has come up short in big moments. The team has never been able to put it all together this season. At some point you are what you are.

It’s angry drinking night in Madison. Y’all be careful. My general warning to Wisconsin fans: Be careful what you drunkenly wish for after a tough loss.

The Badgers finish the regular season (6-6) with its first non-winning record since 2001 (excluding the 2020 covid year when there was only seven games played including bowl game). UW has now lost back-to-back games to Minnesota for the first time since 1993-94 and lost to Minnesota and Iowa in the same season for the first time since 2003.

I feel awful for the seniors going out this way in their final game at Camp Randall Stadium. Just extremely disappointing.

Up Next:

Wisconsin will await its Bowl Game destination.

After the bowl game, it’s going to be an extremely critical offseason, regardless of who’s named the next head coach.
