San José State Spartans Blowout UNLV Rebels in Key MWC Game

The San José State Spartans (4-1, 2-0 MWC) put a dominant showing on display in a 40-7 win over the UNLV Rebels (4-2, 2-1 MWC) inside CEFCU Stadium in San Jose, California on Friday night.

The Spartans are in control of their own destiny and are now the team to beat in the Mountain West Conference West division.

For those that aren’t paying attention, you’re missing a great story on what’s going on in San Jose, California on the campus of San José State University.

The SJSU offense has continued to get better each week and the unit put up 433 yards of total offense on Friday night against a solid UNLV defense. The Spartans also converted on 5-of-10 third down attempts.

Chevan Cordeiro completed 18-of-27 (66.7%) passes for 230 yards and threw for two touchdowns. Cordeiro also ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Kairee Robinson had 61 rushing yards on nine carries (6.8 avg) with one touchdown.

Junior Dominick Mazotti had seven receptions for 100 yards (14.3 avg) with a touchdown. Senior Elijah Cooks had three receptions for 41 yards (13.7 avg) and a touchdown.

The Spartans took a 23-0 lead into intermission and the Rebels never threatened.

The SJSU defense has continued to play well. The unit allowed just 213 yards of total offense and held UNLV to 4-of-12 on third down attempts and 0-for-1 on fourth downs. The defense also forced a Cameron Friel fumble, which SJSU recovered.

San José State played a mostly clean game as they took care of the ball and didn’t commit any turnovers, but they did commit three penalties for 40 yards.

The San José State Spartans will take on their arch-rival, the Fresno State Bulldogs (1-3, 0-0 MWC), next Saturday, October 15th from Valley Children’s Stadium in Fresno, California. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:45 p.m. (CT) / 7:45 p.m. (PT). The game will be nationally televised on the Fox Sports Networks. It is also the Fresno State Homecoming game.

Fresno State leads the all-time series 43-38-3.
