Wisconsin Badgers Men’s Hockey Drops Season Opener in Columbus

The Wisconsin Badgers (0-1, 0-1 B1G) men’s hockey team opened up the 2022-23 season with a Big Ten game. Despite a late push, the Badgers fell 3-1 to the Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0, 1-0 B1G).

The Buckeyes scored a goal in each period and the third gave them a 3-0 advantage with 4:30 remaining in the game on a 5-on-3 power play.

Freshman Cruz Lucius responded for UW a minute later when he tapped in a pass from freshman Ben Dexheimer to cut it to a 3-1 deficit. Junior Mathieu De St. Phalle got the secondary assist on the goal. Wisconsin made another late attempt with some time on the power play, but ran out of time.

Ohio State outshot Wisconsin, 45-30. Wisconsin won more faceoffs (31-29). But the Badgers committed five penalties for 13 minutes and the Buckeyes were able to score on one of them. UW was 0-for-4 on the Power Play.

The Badgers and Buckeyes will face off again tomorrow, October 8th from inside Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. (CT) and will be televised on BTN+.
