The Wisconsin Badgers (2-3, 0-2 B1G) get humbled in a 34-10 loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini (4-1, 1-1 B1G) at Camp Randall Stadium. Illinois scored 27 points unanswered to get their first win in Madison since 2002.
I always thought Bret Bielema would get Illinois turned around and playing competitive football and we saw some of that today. But this loss today is more indicative of where Wisconsin is right now.
First came the shock of losing at home to Washington State. Then the humiliation of being outclassed in every way at Ohio State. Now the embarrassment of your former coach coming in and taking it to you.
There’s really not much to say or be surprised about at this point. Really discouraging – really unfortunate to be on this path.
Wisconsin’s 208 yards of offense were the fewest since the game against Michigan in 2016. The 2 (!) rushing yards were it’s fewest since -26 versus Northwestern in 2015.
Bielema sold out to stop the run, even run-blitzing cornerbacks. Wisconsin never made Illinois pay for this strategy in one embarrassing loss.
The Badgers were owned in the trenches. Film session will not be kind to either the offensive line or defensive line.
Today’s ‘Jump Around’ was the most depressing ‘Jump Around’ since probably the Penn State game in 2008.
Last week against Ohio State was understandable. Today was the most un-Wisconsin-like performance that I can remember. Stunning. Embarrassing. Humbling.
It’s one of the darkest days for the program in the last 32 years and I’m still processing the horror.
My current mood:
I love the University of Wisconsin more than anything, but they are slowly killing me week after week, year after year.
It is officially gut check time.
The Wisconsin Badgers will travel to Evanston, Illinois to take on the Northwestern Wildcats (1-3, 1-0 B1G) next Saturday, October 8th. Kickoff will be at either 2:30 or 3:00 p.m. (Central Time). Television station has not been announced yet.
The Wildcats are currently playing Penn State as I post this blog.
