Wisconsin Badgers RT Riley Mahlman Will Miss Ohio State Game

The Wisconsin Badgers (2-1) won’t have their starting right tackle when they travel to Columbus to play the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0) on Saturday.

Head Coach Paul Chryst said today that redshirt freshman Riley Mahlman still has not progressed enough to be cleared to play. Mahlman went down with a leg injury in the season opener against Illinois State and has missed the last two games.

With Mahlman out, former 5-star recruit Logan Brown has been the starting right tackle. However, redshirt sophomore Trey Wedig got some work at right tackle with the first-team offense against New Mexico State and had success. It’s unclear at the moment how offensive line coach Bob Bostad will approach the game on Saturday.

The veteran coach Bostad also has other decisions to make. At right guard, senior Michael Furtney has started the first three games, but like Wedig, Tanor Bortolini got time with the first-team against New Mexico State and the offense seemed to benefit from it. It was Bortolini’s first game back from a knee injury that sidelined him for about a month.

Junior kicker Vito Calvaruso (1-for-3 on FG attempts) will miss a second straight game with a leg injury. Redshirt freshman Nate Van Zelst (1-for-1 on FG attempts) will handle the place kicking duties for the second consecutive week.

Kickoff specialist Jack Van Dyke appears to be a game-time-decision after missing last week’s game with a leg injury.

Injury Report:

Out:

Riley Mahlman (RT)

Alexander Smith (CB)

Hunter Wohler (S)

Chase Wolf (QB)
