Indoor Football League: Green Bay Blizzard Spotlight

The 2022 Green Bay Blizzard football season will be back with the season opener on March 13th against the Bismarck Bucks inside the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin.

The Green Bay Blizzard, located in Ashwaubenon. Wisconsin, were founded in 2003. Before joining the Indoor Football League in 2010, the Blizzard played in the AF2, the former development league for the now-defunct Arena Football League. The Blizzard are Wisconsin’s sole professional indoor football team.

The Blizzard were very successful during their seven year run in the AF2. From 2003-2009, they made it to the Arena Cup Championship three times, but went 0-3 in those appearances. Green Bay made some noise in the IFL playoffs in their first three seasons in the league, but have since struggled to replicate that success in the IFL.

Head Coach Corey Roberson enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Blizzard and has a 16-21 (.432) record.

In Roberson’s first full season as head coach in 2019, the Blizzard went 9-5 in the regular season and made the playoffs, however, Green Bay was upset by the Nebraska Danger, 45-40, in the First Round. That 2019 season was the first winning season and postseason appearance for the franchise since 2012.

Roberson played nearly a decade in indoor football said: “The biggest thing is I played under a lot of great coaches. I was able to see what they did well and what they struggled with. I learned so much from them, and incorporated that into my own coaching style.”

The Green Bay defense will still have defensive back Bakari Triggs who won IFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 when he had 47 tackles and six interceptions, which was tied for the league lead.

The Green Bay Blizzard are owned by Larry and Kathy Treankler, who enter their seventh year owning the franchise.

Kathy Treankler said it’s both a blessing and a curse to play in the same neighborhood as the NFL’s Green Bay Packers.

“When you’re in an NFL market, people want NFL football, but we choose to look at it from a standpoint that we can bring football tickets to Green Bay year-round. Some people wait generations to get tickets to Packers games, but fans find they are much closer to the action at our games. The IFL has something called the fifth quarter, for all teams, when fans can go on the field after the games to greet players and grab autographs. The period lasts twenty minutes.”

The Green Bay Blizzard are still searching for their first IFL championship and Treankler said it’s her goal to play a championship game in Green Bay.

“I feel the team is in good shape. We have a lot of returning players and also players from other leagues such as the NAL and CIF. We would love to host the championship!”

The Blizzard play all their home games inside the Resch Center, which is across the street from historic Lambeau Field. The Resch Center has a capacity of 8,600 for Indoor Football games.
