For the first time in program history, the Wisconsin Badgers (31-3) women’s volleyball team has won the National Championship!
The Wisconsin Volleyball grit is over-oozing!
The No. 4 Badgers took down fellow Big Ten opponent the No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers in an instant classic five-set thriller!
It was a fifth set for the rest of our lives and the grit shined. I needed my nitroglycerin pills.
National Player of the Year Dana Rettke came back for a fifth year for this very moment. She finished the game with a dagger with the game winning kill and finally, she is a champion!
Something I just thought of. The last kill by Rettke to win the game was clean. You could see it coming. I have to wonder if she realized before she even hit the ball it was over. She had to know she had the match in her hands.
It was only right that Dana ends it.
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield gave us permission to drink! Go crazy everyone!!!! (If you are of legal age, of course. I legally have to say that.)
I’ve rarely been happier for a Wisconsin team as I am for this Badger Volleyball squad. Just some certified feel good stuff.
Freshman Anna Smrek was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
Amazing match. Amazing tournament. Amazing team. Finally, a nationally championship for the Badgers volleyball program. Kelly Sheffield, Dana Rettke and the rest of the squad got it done. They will never be forgotten.
I love seeing a coach like Kelly Sheffield show that emotion and care that much. That was an all-time epic hire by Barry Alvarez.
I’m so proud of this team. Congrats to the squad for making history!
Here’s a fun fact for those of you keeping score at home – the Wisconsin Badgers have the most recent College National Championship!
